Breast reduction is performed to reduce the size of the breasts to a size that a woman desires or that more fits
her body. Women seeking breast reduction often do so because of the discomfort of large, heavy and /or drooping breasts that
often lead to back, shoulder and neck pain, limit their ability to exercise, limit clothing choices or simply cause unwanted
attention. Some women are simply not comfortable with their breast size and may seek a small reduction to create a more desirable
size. A breast reduction may also be performed in conjunction with a breast lift.
Breast reduction involves the removal of excess skin and breast tissue and fat the reduce the size of the breast.
This usually results in scars located under the breast, around the areola and down the lower part of the breast.
Because in many women large breasts pose a functional limitation, some insurance companies will consider coverage
of this procedure, if limitation can be proven.
Following the procedure you may have drains that are left in place for twenty four to seventy two hours. You
are also placed in a brassiere or wrap over your dressings. We advise that you wear a supportive brassiere as much as possible
after this procedure.
Because the breast contains a large amount of fat in most cases they respond to changes in weight as do
other parts of the body. If you gain or lose weight following this procedure you may note similar changes in the breast. If
you are considering significant weight loss you may want to do so prior to having this procedure.
In some cases liposuction of the areas at the side of the breast may be added for contouring.
